The inaugural rehearsal of the University of Antwerp Choir, referred to as “Universitair Koor Antwerpen” or simply “UKA,” marked a harmonious beginning on March 13, 1989.
Since that melodious day, the UKA has gathered weekly, embarking on a delightful exploration of various choral music forms. Initially led by Frans Cuypers for the first three years, the musical baton gracefully passed to the talented Dirk De Nef in 1992, who continues to guide the choir with unwavering dedication and passion. Prior to 2009, the UKA boasted a diverse membership, inclusive of staff and individuals from outside the university.
However, responding to its burgeoning popularity among students, the choir underwent a transformative journey, evolving into a choir created by and for students.
This evolution was driven by the members’ enthusiasm, aligning with the University of Antwerp’s desire for a distinct target audience.
Since then, the choir has not only swelled in size but has also nurtured ambitious aspirations. In just a few years, the membership surged from around 20 to an impressive 75.
Despite facing challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic, the UKA displayed resilience, enduring a significant reduction in size and, in its current phase of recovery, has once again surpassed the 60-member milestone.
Recognition within the University of Antwerp had already soared before the pandemic, with the choir regularly gracing graduations, receptions, and other festivities with enchanting musical interludes, complemented by full-fledged concerts each semester.
Noteworthy milestones include the grand celebration of the University of Antwerp’s 10th anniversary at the opera house in Antwerp in 2013 and the prestigious awarding of honorary doctorates in 2014.
Now, after the pandemic, this recognition is rising once more. In 2023, the UKA was honored to participate in the graduation ceremonies of the faculties of science and specialized medicine, the anointment of emeritus professors of the faculty of business and economics, and the commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of the faculty of applied engineering sciences.
Beyond the university’s walls, the UKA garnered acclaim as well. In March 2016, the choir collaborated with Arti Vocali for a spellbinding performance of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” at the deSingel in Antwerp. The spring of 2017 marked a significant chapter in the UKA’s musical journey, with participation in several choir competitions.
The provincial choir competition in Lier concluded triumphantly in March with the distinguished result of “Excellence with distinction.” In July, the UKA made its international debut at the 3rd European Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, earning a silver diploma at level 10.
Two years later, in Gothenburg, Sweden, the choir achieved another remarkable feat with a silver diploma at level 8. In the same year, we stood on the stage next to none other than Hugh Jackman at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, for his world tour “The Man, The Music, The Show” and performed three songs with him.
The UKA’s journey, marked by resilience, musical excellence, and community engagement, continues to resonate with audiences far and wide.
