Les Amis du Chant – Luxembourg
Czech Republic tour, July 2025
The first activities of the vocal ensemble ‘Les Amis du Chant Luxembourg’ date back to the early 1970s, when a few friends met regularly to indulge their shared passion for a cappella choral singing.
The number and variety of commitments grew over the years, culminating in 1978 when the vocal ensemble officially made its debut. However, it wasn’t until 8 November 1980 that the group presented its first concert under the official name ‘Les Amis du Chant Luxembourg’.
Since its official debut in 1978, the vocal ensemble Les Amis du Chant Luxembourg has given some 500 performances of all kinds (concerts, recitals, TV, CD and radio recordings, masses, etc.), including around forty abroad on trips to Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland and Romania. In 2010, the ensemble had the honour of presenting concerts in Greiz, Drèsde and Potsdam, and in 2012 it presented a concert in Guimaraes, ‘European Capital of Culture 2012’, as well as in Chaves. Lake Constance is a favourite venue for the ensemble. In 2015, the choir gave a concert in Meersburg and at Messkirch Castle.
But it is above all in Luxembourg that the ensemble has made a name for itself with its traditional Christmas Carols concert.
During these activities, the ensemble has had the advantage of collaborating with eminent personalities and ensembles such as Augustin Kubizek, Hermann Prey, Helmut Winschermann, Pierre Cao, Michel Lonsdale, the King’s Singers, Chanticleer, the Bukareste Madrigal, the Chœur de Chambre de Namur, the Psallette de Lorraine, Cantando d’Ekeren, the Deutsche Bachsolisten, Les Musiciens, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg, the Orchestre philharmonique de Liège, the Orchestre de Chambre de Metz, Estro Armonico, Musica Aeterna, Luxembourg Brass, and so on
From the outset, the repertoire has ranged from Renaissance works to contemporary composers, from spiritual music to secular works, but participation in major choral works such as Johannes Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem, Anton Bruckner’s Mass in E minor, Jeanne au Bûcher by Arthur Honegger, Messa di Gloria by Giacomo Puccini, and more recently as a member of the ‘Chœur National’, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Elias Oratorio, Gustav Mahler’s 2nd Symphony, Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum, ‘der Geiger von Echternach’ and J-P. Kemmer’s St John Passion. J-P. Kemmer’s St. John Passion have rounded off the ensemble’s versatile activities.
The ensemble is proud to have had the honour of presenting the world premiere of Michael Töpel’s ‘Kyrie Meditation’ in October 2016.
